Subject: on EOS article (p529 bottom) on November 7, 2000.
Re: Concern on storing of CO2 underground
Dear Dr. Spilhaus
After 1997 Kyoto conference on global warming, controlling the CO2 emission has become a central political issue for industrial counties. One method to control the total CO2 in the atmosphere is to sequestrate it to the underground (EOS, 7 November 2000 issue). I have a strong concern on this method and on the fact that EOS selected an advocative article on this method as the front page article without any concern.
To avoid misunderstanding, it should be reminded that "storing CO2 underground" is NOT "returning." For example, all plastic products originally came from underground in the form of oil. Nobody says that burying plastic underground a "return." The important thing is the form of the carbon. CO2 is the most oxidised form of the carbon, whereas the oil is the least oxidised form. Sequestrating any lower-level form (in chemical potential or energy) of the oil to the underground goes against the concept of "recycle" or "returning."
The "storing underground" method artificially "cuts" the natural cycle of carbon in the way that we destroy the possibility to decrease CO2 by enhancing the natural carbon cycle of biosphere (photosynthesis). In other words, this method sequestrates the carbon into an "unrecoverable" circuit for the nature. Unlike metal or uranium, carbon is one of the most important element in any organism, and nobody knows the outcome of cutting the natural carbon cycle. It might risk the human being more than the green-gas effect of CO2, even if the global warming were caused mainly by the green-house effect. Thus, the "storing underground" method is potentially dangerous.
Furthermore, this method benefits only those countries that do not put enough effort to reduce the usage of fossil fuel per person. In other words, "storing underground" is a method to "cease a symptom instead of removing the real cause of disease," because the ultimate cause of the global warming (= disease) is the over-use of the fossil fuel beyond what the biosphere can react it via the photosynthesis. By removing the "symptom" of increased CO2, the correct solution (i.e., stopping the over-use of the fossil fuel) could be postponed.
Under this circumstance, any advocative article on this method substantially works as a one-sided political article unless the article clearly mentions the potential danger of the method. The above mentioned article on EOS unfortunately falls into this category, and hence I strongly feel a political conflict against this article but never a pure scientific conflict. I do not claim against any scientific research of the underground CO2 deposit, but do have strong concern if the research is made to benefit one-sided political action which could be danger for the nature.
I would like to ask the EOS editor why the above mentioned article was selected on the front page of EOS without any concern on this method. In my opinion, it should not have been selected as the EOS article at all because it is no longer a pure scientific article which requires "politically neutral."
I believe that the entire science community is responsible for not promoting potentially dangerous method, and that it is our responsibility to express any concerns on potentially dangerous methods.
