When you send instruments into space with a rocket, you usually use two rockets. This is because in this way you can get information from a larger area. You send the first rocket to a certain height and the other one a bit higher. The rocket going highest can not carry as many instruments, as it needs more room for the fuel.

Picture 1. Shows a rocket used for sending a payload to space. The payload was named Aureld Vip-High and was one of two Aureld Vip payloads launched from Esrange in late 1986.

Picture 2. Shows the two payloads when they are ready to be put together with the engines.
