Post-doctoral position in Space Physics

at the Swedish Institute of Space Physics, Uppsala, Sweden
for research related to the Saturn system

Applications are invited for a post-doctoral position for studies of the magnetosphere of Saturn and/or its interaction with the moons, e.g. Titan, or the E-ring using instruments onboard the Cassini spacecraft. Further information on space physics research in Uppsala can be found at

Our group has contributed the Langmuir probe (LP) system to the Radio and Plasma Wave Science (RPWS) instrument package on Cassini. We work with data from all instruments within RPWS as well as with data from other instruments on Cassini, although our emphasis is on science derived from the RPWS sensors (LP, magnetic search coil, electric field antenna).

The successful candidate will be involved in extensive international collaboration. Analysis of data is an important part of the work and experience in combining advanced data analysis with theoretical modelling is an advantage. Interest and experience in development of instrumental techniques and methods will likewise be positively valued, and so will experience in coordination of scientific activities.

Candidates should have completed a PhD during 2006 or later. However, if the candidate has an older degree and wants to refer to special circumstances, such as parental leave, this should be clearly stated. The candidate should not currently be an active researcher at the Swedish Institute of Space Physics in Uppsala or the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Uppsala University, Sweden.

The position is available at the Swedish Institute of Space Physics, located at the Ångström Laboratory in Uppsala, Sweden, from the second half of 2009 for 1.5 years, with a possible extension. The position is funded by a grant from the Swedish Research Council (VR) and by the Swedish Institute of Space Physics (IRF). Closing date is October 5, 2009. The Swedish Institute of Space Physics (IRF) is a governmental research institute which conducts research and postgraduate education in atmospheric physics, space physics and space technology. Measurements are made in the atmosphere, ionosphere, magnetosphere and around other planets with the help of ground-based equipment (including radar), stratospheric balloons and satellites. IRF was established (as Kiruna Geophysical Observatory) in 1957 and its first satellite instrument was launched in 1968. The head office is in Kiruna (geographic coordinates 67.84° N, 20.41° E) and IRF also has offices in Umeå, Uppsala and Lund.
