Abstract:
Bright deposits in permanently shadowed craters on Mercury and the Moon are thought to harbor water ice. Dwarf planet Ceres also has permanently shadowed craters, which may harbor water ice as supported by indirect evidence. We aim to directly detect the spectral characteristics of water ice by analyzing color images acquired by the Dawn spacecraft. We reconstruct the reflectance spectra of the largest shadowed bright deposits, carefully considering in-field stray light and image compression artifacts. In his search for water ice, the speaker learned important lessons on how to do Science.
