An overview of the Met Office's three arctic snow emissivity campaigns

Over the past decade, the assimilation of satellite-based microwave sounding radiances into numerical weather prediction models has dramatically improved forecast performance. However, assimilation of lower tropospheric sounding radiances is generally only carried out over ice-free open ocean at present due to high variability in surface emissivity and effective temperature. The Met Office has participated in two arctic airborne campaigns in the last decade to investigate the characteristics of the surface emission of microwaves in order to premote assimilation of lower tropospheric sounding channels over snow-covered surfaces. This talk will summarize the results of these campaigns and give an overview of the currently ongoing, third, arctic campaign.
