Spacecraft charging and its influence on low-energy ion measurements made by Rosetta-ICA

Spacecraft charging causes inevitable issues for low-energy plasma measurements. The measured charged particles are attracted to or repelled from the spacecraft before detection. This affects both the energy and travel direction of the ions, which in turn distorts the field of view of the instrument. The Ion Composition Analyzer (ICA) on board Rosetta suffers from this effect. The positive ions are attracted to the negatively charged spacecraft, which heavily distorts the low-energy part of the data. In this study we use the SPIS software to model the field of view distortion of ICA for low ion energies. The method and an overview of the results will be presented.
