Arctic cirrus clouds over northern Sweden: microphysical properties studied with the Balloon-borne Ice Cloud particle Imager B-ICI

Cirrus clouds play an important role in the radiation balance of the atmosphere. Cirrus clouds can be warming and cooling. This depends on their micro- and macrophysical properties. For better weather and climate models and remote sensing retrievals, precise knowledge of these properties is necessary. Less is known about Arctic cirrus clouds. Nevertheless, climate change is stronger in high latitudes than in other latitudes. Thus, more knowledge about micro- and macrophysical properties of Arctic cirrus clouds is needed urgently.
Therefore, balloon-borne in-situ measurements with concurrent LIDAR measurements have been performed in Kiruna.
The Balloon-borne Ice Particle Imager B-ICI and the data analysis will be introduced. Typical ice particle properties, a new parameterization of the size distribution, and optical properties of Arctic Cirrus clouds will be presented.
