Microwave limb sounders

The lecture introduces the microwave limb sounding technique. It has three parts. Part one deals with the basic properties of limb sounding instruments, such as viewing geometry, antenna, and receiver. Part two deals with the physics of the measurement, it explains which quantity is observed, and why the measurement contains information on trace gas concentrations. The impact of clouds on the measurement is also discussed here. Part three discusses some past, present, and future instruments of this class and shows a few science highlights.
