First results and future possibilities for groundbased optical research using the new emCCD imager

Urban Brändström
Swedish Institute of Space Physics

IRF has recently procured a new electron-multiplication charge coupled device (EMCCD). The electron-multiplication register eliminates the readout noise associated with ordinary CCDs. Thus narrow-band spectroscopic imaging measurements of photon-limited signals can be carried out with extremly high temporal resolution where up to 100 frames per second at 1024 x1024 pixels resolution seems feasible. This opens up entirely new possibilites for optical studies of aurora, radio-induced optical emissions and meteor trails. As a similar device exists at University of Tromsö, Norway, bistatic studies with high temporal resolution are possible. Also, the combination of such measurements with the tomographic abilities of ALIS further enhances the measurement possibilities. The talk will contain a short tutorial on radiometric units and a brief status report of ongoing work.

The seminare will be 30 minutes followed by 30 minutes discussion and brainstorming.
