Magnetohydrodynamic electron inertial waves

Abstract
Magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) waves have been subject to numerous studies since they were first predicted by Alfvén in 1942. Describing the dynamics of low-frequency electromagnetic phenomena, these waves are relevant for a range of astrophysical plasmas, including the ones found in the terrestrial magnetosphere. Based on an MHD description with inclusion of electron inertial effects, a method for distinguishing periodic and non-periodic MHD wave modes will be presented. Mode dependence on plasma parameters such as angle to magnetic field, Mach number and plasma beta will be discussed. Auroral acceleration, coronal heating and Naturally Enhanced Ion Acoustic Lines seen in EISCAT spectra are possible applications.
