Abstract.
The project ASCCI is a mission of the German research aircraft HALO. Following a similar mission in winter 2025/16 we want to investigate the interannual variability in polar stratospheric dynamics and in polar ozone. Climate change is expected to favour large seasonal loss of ozone in the Arctic in the future. It is thus of importance to regularly revisit the Arctic lower stratosphere and to investigate the ozone loss in a changing atmosphere. There is currently a consistent discrepancy between modelled and observed
ozone in the upper troposphere. In contrast to mid-latitudes, modelled polar tropospheric ozone generally shows a significant low bias compared to the observations. It has been argued that this could be due to both chemistry (e.g. levels of tropospheric pollution and NOy influx from the stratosphere) as well as transport of ozone rich stratospheric air. The ASCCI mission will hopefully contribute to resolving this discrepancy.
The seminar is also online. See emails for connection details.
