The winter 2022/23 was a rather unusual winter when it comes to the development of the polar vortex. This is also reflected in the evolution of stratospheric ozone during the course of the winter. A weak polar vortex appearing rather late in the season disappearing already in early March lead to a relatively undisturbed ozone layer with little, if any, ozone depletion this winter. This winter's meteorological conditions will be compared to a winter with relatively strong ozone depletion in order to set this year's results into context. Another effect of the weak polar vortex is the relatively high temperature at around 25 km which lead to very few days with polar stratospheric clouds, an other reason for very little ozone depletion.
