Arctic Science at Umeå University
Carol Norberg, Department of Physics, Umeå University
and
Keith Larson, Director of the Arctic Centre at Umeå University
Umeå University is leading trandisciplinary research and eduction related to the Arctic through its Arctic Centre. There is global interest in the rapidly changing Arctic environment. It is widely accepted that the average temperature on Earth is rising, however the rate of increase in the Arctic is at least double the global average with consequences for the Arctic itself, but also the rest of the planet
The Department of Physics in collaboration with the Swedish Institute of Space Physics has been running an undergraduate distance course in Arctic Science for 17 years. Carol Norberg will describe the development of the course and course structure. She will give a summary of the diverse topics covered such as auroral physics, ice crystal formation in the atmosphere, development of the snowpack over the winter and the resulting risk for avalanches, sea ice and the challenges of living in a low-temperature environment.
Keith Larson will present the Arctic Centre at Umeå University which has started a graduate school focussed on sustainable development.
