Visualisation and creative exploration of atmospheric data - VisA
Madelen Bodin, Curiosum Science Center and Department of Science and Mathematics Education, Umeå University

VisA aims at finding new knowledge about how to increase understanding and interest among public, especially young people, about science and technology using authentic data for scientific experiences. Authentic data will be provided by , e.g., research infrastructure EISCAT3D, which is currently being set up in the Arctic region. EISCAT3D will collect atmospheric/ionospheric data at 3 different locations in the Arctic region and provides information about the complex systems in the atmosphere and the interaction between the Sun and the Earth. Other data sources will also be used. The information in the data will be made accessible through interactive visualisation, giving possibilities for both researchers and a general public to explore the phenomena and processes that characterise the atmosphere. Platforms for visualisation of and interaction with the data will be explored in order to create activities where users in a non-formal learning environment, such as a science center, can explore and investigate science experiments that are in the frontiers of science research. The cognitive and affective effects of these activities will be investigated in order to gain more knowledge about how these activities affect users.
The main goals of VisA are:
• To gain knowledge about how interest in and knowledge about science and technology among young people can increase by using authentic data sets for storytelling and visualisation
• To gain knowledge about how big datasets, like data from EISCAT3D, can be made accessible for public outreach, especially young people, through interactive visualisation
• To provide models for digital installations and activities based on scientific data for non-formal learning environments, eg., science centers, in collaboration between scientists, science education researchers, and experts in interactive visualisation
• To gain knowledge about the activities’ affective and cognitive effects on users
• To make use of the data from EISCAT3D for learning science in non-formal learning environments
The seminar will give an overview of the project and an introduction to the technological and scientific challenges of data processing and visualization followed by a discussion.
