In-situ imaging of ice and snow crystals for atmospheric research

Abstract.
Ice particles in the atmosphere, both in form of clouds and precipitation, are important for the hydrological cycle and the Earth-atmosphere radiation budget.
Remote sensing of ice clouds and precipitation is difficult and requires good knowledge of underlying microphysical properties, which is also needed as input for climate and weather forecast models. Such knowledge includes size distributions and particle shapes and is acquired by in-situ measurements.
Here, I am presenting in-situ instruments developed in Kiruna for optical imaging of ice particles, both on ground and on a balloon-borne platform. Some results from recent measurements are shown to demonstrate the measurement capabilities.
