Theory of data compression and application to space instrumentation

In this 45-min lecture, a basic theory related data compression is described, and its application to the present space instrumentation is overviewed with real examples of scientific data obtained from several spacecraft missions.
The aims of this lecture are
- to understand a basic concept of the data compression, for example, the coding of data, the entropy in the information theory, etc;
- to understand the difference in lossless and lossy compression, together with their characteristics and the range of applicability;
- to understand the fact that the selection of compression scheme depends on the characteristics of the data to be handled;
- to overview several of the compression schemes, in particular, which have been applied to space instruments onboard spacecraft having sent to extra-terrestrial environment; and
- to look at characteristics of the compressed data, which were obtained from real extra-terrestrial spacecraft mission.
