We have collected microbes at high altitude by using airplanes and balloons (up to 30 km). To address whether microbes exist and can survive at higher altitude (and/or space), we proposed microbe capture and microbe exposure experiments at ISS as a part of TANPOPO mission. Characteristics of microbes we captured at high altitude and the outline of TANPOPO mission will be discussed.
