Rapid decay of storm-time ring current

Abstract
Traditionally, the storm-time ring current is thought to decay due to charge
exchange with geocoronal hydrogen. However, the charge exchange cannot explain
rapid decay of the ring current. We performed the ring current simulation that
takes into account the pitch angle scattering process occurring in a curved field
line. The pitch angle scattering can remove the ring current with e-folding time
of 6 hours. The result is fairly well consistent with power of precipitating
protons inferred from proton auroral observation.
