Earthquake and Tsunami

Abstract
On 11th March 2011, a very strong earthquake occurred close to the Pacific coast of Japan. This was later named "The 2011 off the Pacific coast of Tohoku Earthquake" by the Japanese Meteorological Agency. The earthquake is the fourth largest earthquake in the world since 1900, and its moment magnitude was 9.0. After the main quake, a very large "tsunami" followed, devastating the Tohoku area. Subsequent afterquakes are still continuing.
The first part of this seminar gives basic information (Japanese junior- or senior high school level) on earthquakes and tsunamis. We will describe history, physical properties such as generation mechanisms and associated science topics such as the possibility of predictions. We also plan to present how the Japanese people take countermeasures against earthquakes.
The second part of this seminar is a slide show. Mr Kei Masunaga will show pictures taken by himself and his colleagues who were at Sendai in Tohoku at the time of the earthquake. Kei will tell you a "real story of his experience" during this terrible earthquake event.
