Extreme Solar Particle Events - are we ready for one?

Solar flares are associated with massive ejection of protons from the Sun. Observations of flares from Sun-like stars have shown flares up to 4 orders of magnitude stronger than those seen from the Sun. Can we expect a solar proton event which is also 4 orders of magnitude stronger ? Evidence from cosmogenic nucleide archives suggests that at least one event which was 2 orders of magnitude stronger than anything during the satellite era has occurred in the last 1500 years. Simulations will be used to look at how such an event might show up in IRF's observations.
