Atmospheric waves: recent developments in theory and understanding of their origin
This talk provides an overview of current and recent research on theory of acoustic-gravity waves (AGWs) at CIRES, University of Colorado. The WKB and ray approximations are rigorously derived, which reveals and corrects some long-standing misconceptions regarding dispersion and dissipation of atmospheric waves. An exact analytic solution of nonlinear hydrodynamic equations is obtained for a class of strongly nonlinear AGWs. The theory is applied to model the effects of atmospheric dynamics on ionospheric manifestations of earthquakes and tsunamis. Theoretical predictions of generation of atmospheric waves by infragravity waves in the ocean are verified using radar observations of AGWs in the thermosphere.
