Abstract.
Modeling the interaction between Callisto and Jupiter’s magnetosphere is important to understand the origin of the magnetic field perturbations observed by Galileo, potentially related to subsurface oceans. By using a 3-D hybrid plasma solver, we have varied the induced magnetic dipole responses due to the time-varying magnetic field of the Jovian magnetosphere corresponding to the C3, C9, and C10 flybys by Galileo. The internal conductivity of Callisto has been set to match the induced dipole response. The model is thus including the physics of a time-varying magnetic field and the dynamics of the magnetospheric plasma. We see that the magnetic response by Callisto depends strongly on the magnetospheric plasma environment.
