The Martian atmospheric ion escape rate dependence on upstream solar conditions - implications for tracing the evolution of the atmosphere on Mars

Abstract.
The loss of habitability on Mars is thought to be intrinsically linked to the continuous escape of Martian atmospheric mass to space. We investigate potential driving factors for influence on the Martian atmospheric ion escape rate by integrating Mars Express ASPERA-3/IMA heavy ion flux measurements in the Martian tail taken at similar (binned) solar wind density (nsw), velocity (vsw) and EUV radiation flux (IEUV) upstream conditions. Empirical-analytical models for atmospheric ion escape are developed by fitting a model function to calculated escape rates for all sufficiently sampled solar conditions.
