Infrasound source detection and detection capability using ARISE and CTBTO infrasound arrays
Infrasound is generated by regular and repetitive sources as e.g. microbaroms, mining activity and supersonic flights as well as by singular events like explosions, volcanic eruptions and meteorites.
Observations of these sources are performed using infrasound arrays of the global CTBTO IMS (Comprehensive nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization – International Monitoring System) and national infrasound arrays of partners gathered in the European ARISE project (Atmospheric dynamics Research InfraStructure in Europe).
Studies of 13 years of regular infrasound detections are presented as well as prominent infrasound events like e.g. the Chelyabinsk meteorite (Russia, 15 February 2013). Global detections of this strong infrasound reference events can be used to derive detection capabilities of individual stations and thus estimate the performance of the global infrasound monitoring system.
