PMSE Observations with the tri-static EISCAT VHF

Abstract.
Polar mesospheric summer echoes (PMSE) are coherent radar echoes that are observed in the summer mesosphere typically at 50 to 500 MHz. Models to describe the formation of the radar echoes refer to e.g. neutral atmospheric turbulence, atmospheric stratification, the presence of dust and ice particles, and the charging of the dust. One approach toward a better understanding of PMSE formation is to study the variation of the radar reflection with scattering angle with multi-static observations. Since summer 2013 EISCAT operates the VHF in tri-static configuration at 224 MHz. We report observations carried out in June 2013 where all receivers detected PMSE for a large fraction of the observation time. The observations suggest that the scattering process leading to the PMSE occurs over a broad range of scattering angles and that the atmospheric layers generating the PMSE move with a speed in the order of a few 10 m/s. Observations and analysis work are made in collaboration with Ingemar Häggström and Anders Tjulin (EISCAT) and Sina Rostami (LTU Spacemaster Student).
