In the evening of November 21, 2003 an ionosphere heating experiment was conduced in Tromsø to investigate the effects caused by powerful HF pumping of the ionopshere. During a time interval of 4 minutes, when the heating beam illuminated a region of upward field-aligned current, the sudden appearance of an auroral arc was observed by the ALIS imagers. Strong temporal variations of the arc were coincident with the HF pumping modulation period. Analysis of optical data and ionospheric parameters measured by EISCAT shows that the auroral arc was stimulated due to modification of the ionosphere-magnetosphere current system caused by modulated HF heating of the ionosphere.
