Astrobiology missions to Mars.

The current activity on Mars is in many aspects focused on questions related to the possibility of past and present life on the red planet, but investigating conditions for life is not the same thing as actually looking for fossil or extant life itself. The next generation of Mars landers will be aimed at investigating evidence for life, but such an endeavour will require an entirely different setup of instruments, as well as an increased knowledge of the geological history of Mars. In this talk I will discuss why life may have existed on Mars, where we should look for it, and how that search may be conducted in practical terms.
