Abstract
The development of radio communication via satellites orbiting the earth and of low-frequency radio telescopes has made it important to understand the linear and nonlinear interaction between radio waves and the Earth's ionospheric plasma layer. Computer simulations of space plasma have become increasingly feasible with the rapid development of today's computer technology, including relatively cheap computer clusters where large-scale simulations can be performed. Full-scale simulations of the ionospheric layer will be a valuable complenent to physical experiments and satellite observations. I will show some examples of phenomena in space plasma that can be modeled numerically, including kinetic models of the formation of an ionospheric layer, electromagnetic wave propagation in inhomogeneous and magnetized ionospheric plasmas, and electromagnetic wave turbulence.
