Studies of lunar and solar tidal periodicities at the summer mesopause by using measurements of Polar Mesosphere Summer Echoes

Solar thermal and lunar gravitational tides are statistically studied
by using long-term measurements
of Polar Mesosphere Summer Echoes (PMSE) from 2002 to 2012. Lunar and solar tidal oscillations are shown
to be clearly present in PMSE data. Both amplitudes and phases of lunar and solar tides are estimated
for the first time using the ESRAD PMSE data. The diurnal (24 h), semidiurnal (12 h) and terdiurnal (8 h) solar migrating tides exhibit pronounced variations in the PMSE power and wind velocity components. Lunar tides demonstrate clear oscillations in the PMSE power and wind velocities as well. Amplitudes of some lunar tidal components are comparable to ones of the solar tidal modes. Our estimations of lunar and solar tidal amplitudes agree well with ones of previous model and experimental studies.
