Abstract
Optical measurements of aurora and airglow has been carried out by IRF since the International Geophysical Year in 1957. This seminar will consist of three parts followed by a discussion.

1. What have we done? A short semi-popular review of instruments used by IRF-K together with a selection of scientific results.

2. What can we do? Does advances in measurement techniques make scientific interpretation more difficult? What is an emCCD by the way?

3. Is it useful? A summary of recent, ongoing and future measurements with ALIS, (including an overview of plans for ISS-ALIS coordinated observations of aurora and/or Geminid meteor trails, etc.)

4. Any idea to continue? Open discussion about future possibilities (at least 15 minutes).
